Mexiko Cenoten: Die spektakulärsten Unterwasserwelten entdecken

Mexico is known for its beautiful beaches, fascinating Mayan ruins and vibrant culture. But beneath the surface lies another world: the cenotes. These natural sinkholes with crystal-clear water are not only geological wonders, but also magical places for swimming, snorkelling and diving. In this blog post, I’ll introduce you to some of the most impressive cenotes: Cenote Chukum, Cenote X’ux Ha, Gran Cenote, Cenote Santa Cruz, Dos Ojos and Cenote El Pit.

What are cenotes?

Cenotes are natural water holes formed by the collapse of limestone caves. These unique formations are mainly found on the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. They were sacred places for the Maya, as they served as entrances to the underworld and important sources of water. Today, cenotes attract visitors from all over the world who want to experience the breathtaking underwater landscapes.

My recommendation for cenotes in Mexico

Cenote X’ux Ha: An insider tip for nature lovers

A little off the beaten track is the Cenote X’ux Ha. This less-visited cenote offers a peaceful setting and crystal-clear water, ideal for snorkelling. Here you can enjoy the silence and unspoilt nature to the fullest. Especially at midday, you can take great pictures when the light hits the water.

Gran Cenote: A paradise for snorkelers

The Gran Cenote, near Tulum, is one of Mexico’s most famous cenotes – and for good reason. Its clear waters and impressive rock formations make it a popular destination for snorkellers and divers. Turtles and small fish accompany you as you explore the underwater world.

Cenote Santa Cruz Tulum: Family fun in nature

The Cenote Santa Cruz in Tulum is a perfect choice for families. With its calm, shallow waters, it offers ideal conditions for swimming and relaxing. You can also take guided tours to learn more about the geology and history of these special places.

Dos Ojos: A diver’s paradise

The Cenote Dos Ojos (“two eyes”) is part of an extensive cave system and is a must-see for divers. With its two interconnected chambers, it offers spectacular underwater landscapes. Divers can dive among fascinating stalactites and stalagmites in an almost surreal play of light.

Cenote El Pit: Magic in the depths

The Cenote El Pit is the deepest cenote on the Yucatán Peninsula and an absolute highlight for experienced divers. The deep blue water, the beam of light reaching down into the depths and the spectacular rock formations create an extraordinary atmosphere. An absolute must for adventurers!

Tips for your visit

  • Arrive early: Visit the cenotes as early as possible in the morning to avoid the crowds. Or around midday, when the light is at its best. Peace and quiet versus the best light conditions.
  • Bring diving goggles and a snorkel: To fully enjoy the underwater world, you should definitely bring snorkelling equipment with you.Taucherbrille und Schnorchel mitbringen: Um die Unterwasserwelt voll auszukosten, solltest du unbedingt Schnorchel-Ausrüstung dabei haben.
  • Respect nature: Cenotes are sensitive ecosystems. Do not use sunscreen or other chemicals before entering the water.
