How much does a trip to Costa Rica cost?
Costa Rica is a dream destination for nature and adventure lovers. But how expensive is a trip to this little paradise really? In this article, you will find out what costs to expect and how to plan your budget.
Flights to Costa Rica
Flight costs vary depending on the departure airport and travel time:
Return flights from Germany usually cost between €600 and €1,200. In the low season (May to November), you can often find cheap deals starting at €500. If you are flying via the USA, please note that you will also need a visa for transit. The best way to get there is via San Jose, as the capital is centrally located.
HERE you can find some very good flight deals.
Accommodation
Costa Rica offers accommodation for every budget:
• Hostels: 12-25 EUR per night in a dormitory.
• Mid-range hotels: 50–100 EUR/night for a double room.
• Luxury accommodation: 180 EUR and above, especially in popular locations such as Manuel Antonio or La Fortuna.
• Airbnb: £30–80 per night, depending on location and amenities.
Tip: Bungalows or cabins are often affordable and charming alternatives! Especially if there are more than two of you.
Transport costs
Costa Rica offers various transport options:
• Buses: Public buses are cheap and only cost between 5 EUR and 12 EUR for longer journeys.
• Shuttle services: More convenient but more expensive, around 22 – 35 EUR per journey.
• Car hire: From 30–60 EUR/day, plus petrol costs (approx. 1.40 EUR/litre) and often additional insurance.
• Taxis & Uber: In cities such as San José or Liberia, Uber is usually cheaper than taxis (approx. 7 – 18 EUR for short distances).
We decided to hire a car because it allowed us to reach all locations quickly and flexibly. If you want to visit remote places such as Corcovado in the west, a four-wheel drive vehicle is advantageous.

Food and drink
Eating out in Costa Rica can be affordable if you know the right spots:
• Sodas (local restaurants): A typical casado (rice, beans, meat/fish, salad) costs only 4–7 EUR.
• Restaurants: Main courses cost between 10–20 EUR, often more in tourist areas.
• Supermarkets: For those who prefer to cook for themselves, local markets (ferias) are an affordable option for fresh fruit and vegetables.
• Drinks: Water and soft drinks cost around 1–2 EUR, beer around 2–4 EUR.
Tip: Tap water is drinkable in most parts of the country, which saves money. Alternatively, you can use a water filter and save even more money and plastic.
Activities and admission fees
Nature is the highlight in Costa Rica, but many attractions charge admission fees:
• National parks: Admission is between 10–20 EUR per person.
• Tours: Guided hikes or wildlife viewing tours cost between 30 and 100 EUR, depending on the duration and provider. Tours that include overnight stays (e.g. in Corcovado National Park) can be more expensive.
• Adventure activities: Ziplining, rafting or diving cost between 50 and 120 EUR.
• Free activities: Many beaches and waterfalls are freely accessible.
Tip: Don’t forget to budget for tips for guides (approx. 10–15%).

Money-saving tips for Costa Rica
• Travel during the off-season (rainy season): Many accommodations and activities offer discounts.
• Use public transport to avoid expensive shuttle services.
• Visit less touristy regions such as the Nicoya Peninsula or the southeast.
• You can find affordable eSIMs for fast internet HERE.
• Buy snacks and drinks in supermarkets to reduce visits to restaurants. Take a water filter with you so you can drink tap water anywhere.
Meine Costa Rica Reisekosten 2024 für 18 Tage
My flight costs were low, as I travelled from Panama by bus and then continued on to Guatemala by plane. With the exception of Finca Amistad, the accommodation costs were generally on the lower side. Meals were mostly taken in simple soda restaurants.
Transport costs include the cost of renting a four-wheel drive vehicle. You can find offers HERE. The most expensive activity was a tour of Corcovado National Park with overnight accommodation.
| flights | accommodation | catering | transport | activities | other |
| 125€ | 650€ | 425€ | 305€ | 467€ | 26€ |
The total cost for 18 days in Costa Rica amounts to just under €2,000.
