One of the most beautiful hikes in Guatemala
In the mountains that rise majestically above the villages around Lake Atitlán, there is one of the most spectacular viewpoints for sunrises in Guatemala. What makes the Indian Nose hike so special is that the ascent takes less than 30 minutes. From the summit, you can enjoy breathtaking views of San Pedro, Santa Clara, San Pablo, Lake Atitlán and the San Pedro volcano as the sun slowly rises above the horizon.
Recommended equipment: Headlamp, sturdy shoes, camera with fast standard zoom lens, drone if necessary
The Indian Nose hike
The Indian Nose hike has a total length of only 3 kilometres. The total elevation gain for the sunrise hike to the summit is 290 metres. That works out to about 150 metres of elevation gain per kilometre – a fairly steep climb to reach the 2,236-metre summit.
The hike is very short and intense, so you can reach the summit in about 40 minutes. Although the climb is relatively steep, the effort will quickly be forgotten as the adrenaline rushes and you get closer to the summit. I would say this hike is easily manageable for children, families, travellers and people of average fitness. Especially if you walk slowly.
My experience
In the early hours of the morning, I didn’t want to risk getting lost and missing the sunrise. Besides, it seemed impossible to me to get a tuk-tuk at four in the morning. So I booked a tour.
It was four o’clock in the morning and the walk to the pick-up point was a little eerie with all the stray dogs. The minivan ride to the starting point of the Indian Nose hike took about 30 minutes along a steep and extremely winding road. Our guide led us up the path, walking ahead. We took short breaks every now and then to wait for slower group members. Thanks to the early start, we made it there well in advance of sunrise. Fresh coffee and snacks were waiting for us at the top. The sun only appeared briefly in the cloudy sky, but it lit up everything and coloured the volcanoes in shades of yellow.
The descent took less than 20 minutes before our guide drove us back – along the picturesque but winding road, which in places had more potholes than road surface. If you are staying near Lake Atitlán, the Indian Nose hike should definitely be on your bucket list. It’s an inexpensive, short adventure with epic views and the perfect start to an eventful day in the region.
Fazit Indian Nose
The hike to Indian Nose is an absolute highlight for early risers and adventurers at Lake Atitlán. The short but steep climb rewards you with a spectacular panorama that shows the surrounding villages, Lake Atitlán and the imposing volcanoes in a unique light. The sunrise in particular makes this place a magical experience that you should not miss.
