WhenIfirstheardaboutthenewSony14mmGM1.8,Iwasalreadyverycuriousaboutitsperformance. Especially for astrophotography, the fast glass could be an enrichment. So here is the Sony 14mm GM 1.8 test part 1.

GM stands for quality
Sony 14mm GM 1.8 test: The first impression of the lens was very positive. It has a very high-quality finish and looks very classy with the orange G for GM. The permanently integrated aperture protection stands slightly above the convex lens and does not appear disturbingly large. The lens cap has two handles for unlocking and removing it.
The lens is supplied with a padded black bag and a carrying strap.
The lens is attached to the camera particularly securely. It is therefore particularly weatherproof and protected against splash water.
At under 500g, the weight of the lens is impressive for such a fast ultra-wide-angle lens and it really does fit into any photo backpack. It could therefore become an ALWAYS-TO-GO lens.
Operation
The Sony 14mm GM 1.8 offers a free configurable button and an automatic manual focus switch. It also has an aperture ring for manual aperture adjustment. A switch can be used to choose between a clicking or smooth transition. The smooth transition is particularly interesting for filmmakers.
Filter utilization
Similar to the Sigma 14-24 2.8 FE, the lens has a filter slot at the rear end of the lens. This is practical in itself, as the filters are particularly small and light. However, variable filters can hardly be used. The large 150mm filter systems from Haida, for example, would help here.
First interim conclusion
After using the lens for the first time, I am very satisfied.
- Good usability and high-quality workmanship
- Very light
- High image quality
The exact strengths and weaknesses will become apparent in further extensive use.
